medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Vera,
The cross before and/or after a name is not at all unusual on
Carolingian objects. You will find it, for example, on quite a few
rulers' seals and coins. In those cases, at least, it has nothing to do
with bishops, but is rather connected to prayers and invocations.
I was in fact just about to send to the list a notice about such
material in my web site's historical archive:
I have today posted many images of Carolingian seals and charters,
bringing the total to 67 such photos (plus a few Merovingian examples).
All were made from original medieval materials, not modern casts, so the
seal images often include beehives, Tironian notes, etc. Rulers range
from Charlemagne's brother Carloman to Lothar IV of France.
In addition, I have recently brought the number of Carolingian coin
images up to 39.
I hope that these photographs will be of use.
As always, do let me know if you would like me to prioritize
digitization of any particular section of my archive.
Best regards,
Genevra (www.KornbluthPhoto.com)
