medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Call for Papers
SSBMA, Kalamazoo, MI 2011
Sponsored Sessions:
‘Patrons, Users, and Receivers of Medieval Exegesis’
‘The Moral Sense of Scripture: Bible and Ethics in the Middle Ages’
This is a call for papers to help round out two of the sessions at the 2011
International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan sponsored by the
Society for the Study of the Bible in Middle Ages. We are currently seeking
papers (20 min.) for the sessions entitled ‘Patrons, Users, and Receivers of
Medieval Exegesis’ and ‘The Moral Sense of Scripture: Bible and Ethics in
the Middle Ages’.
The ‘Patrons’ session is intended to focus on Scriptural Exegesis not so
much as a product of the author but as works sought after and subsequently used
by different levels of Medieval Society. Some possible topics for this session
would include: attempts to answer why a Patron is linked with a particular
work, examining the use of a work by the subsequent medieval intellectual
tradition, or exploring various ways in which the content and message of
Biblical scholarship could be disseminated to the wider populace.
The ‘Ethics’ session is aimed at exploring how scholars used the bible,
particularly by means of the moral sense, to shape, control, or reprimand their
wider cultural settings. It is surely a given that the Bible played an
important part in shaping the ethics and morality of the medieval world, but
papers in this session should explore particular ways in which the exegetical
enterprise could be harnessed/adapted to achieve such ends.
Thank you for taking the time to read this Call for Papers. If you are
interested in contributing a twenty minute paper please contact Paul Hilliard,
[log in to unmask], as soon as possible and no later than September 15th
2010. Also if you know of anyone who might be interested in participating in
these sessions please feel free to forward this email.
