Dear all,
this message was intended to be shared among the members of the Cataloguing and Indexing Group of Cilip but on second thoughts it may be interesting for a larger audience. I have just voted for the best papers presented at the Conference "Internet Politics and Policy" I attended last week, following the Cataloguing and Indexing Conference and AGM in Exeter.
All the papers are available at http://microsites.oii.ox.ac.uk/ipp2010
My choices:
1) Vili Lehdonvirta, Perttu Virtanen
- A New Frontier in Digital Content Policy: Case Studies in the Regulation of Virtual Goods and Artificial Scarcity
2) Elisabeth A. Jones, Joseph W. Janes
- Anonymity in a World of Digital Books: Google Books, Privacy, and the Freedom to Read
3) Sandra Braman
- Privacy for Networked Computing, 1969-1979
I think Lehdonvirta - Virtanen paper is brilliant in that it transferred well documented, interdisciplinary and up to date references, data, ideas about:
- the games / social networking market and its role in reshaping the online media landscape;
- how to create economic value from virtual goods;
- how to identify important attributes and properties of virtual goods also according to the way in which they are experienced from a designer point of view, but I believe this is a crucial point also from a curatorial point of view. "Future" cataloguing standards cannot avoid to be interested in the creation of works at the beginning in order to define minimum datasets for specific communities / contexts;
- what is important from a policy point of view in order to prevent and fight cybercrime, illegal betting and related trafficking.
Back to my job seeking efforts! I am currently looking for new career opportunities as well as temporary / permanent assignments in London, Oxford, Cambridge, SE or SW England. My current professional interests: change and project management, digital libraries, information governance, new standards and linked data in cataloguing, publishing, records and information management projects.
