Dear Colleagues
Friedrich Christian Delius, one of Germany's most critically acclaimed contemporary writers, is in conversation with poet and writer Blake Morrison about his book "Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman" at the Goethe-Institut London. The book first appeared in German in 2006 and is now published in English by Peirene Press in a translation by Jamie Bulloch, who will also be on the podium. The event is moderated by journalist Rosie Goldsmith.

"Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman" provides a compelling portrayal of a young German woman, pregnant with her first child, who takes a walk through Rome one sunny January afternoon in 1943. Innocent and naïve, the fighting in the war exists for her as little more than a day-dream - until she realizes that her husband might never return from Africa....
F.C. Delius, born in 1943, lives in Berlin and Rome. Since his first poetry collection in 1965 he has published 14 novels and five poetry collections and has been translated into 17 languages.
Blake Morrison is perhaps best-known for his two memoirs "And When Did You Last See Your Father?" and "Things My Mother Never Told Me" as well as his book "As If" on the James Bulger trial.
