Dear Elaine, Thank for the work you have been doing on our collective behalf to get things moving, both in setting up the premises etc for the meeting for everyone interested in community psychology and also for liasing with BPS re the inaugural meeting of the section. I am trying to stay hopeful that we can be both critical and constructive...we are trying to do something really difficult here. in getting a balance between formal and informal processes... at a time when we are all beleagued by awful external structural/ economic/ political processes too, bearing down on us: ..
What about the following for the meeting, though time will be tight and I am sure my list of suggestions is too long.. . ( Also, I have another suggestion: how about we all agree to bring along a small contribution of food to share, making the whole thing sociable and friendly rather than askign for dull and boring BPS sandwiches? )
First, agree a way for the meeting to be organised and recorded: someone to facilitate/ chair ? Someone to record notes and share them afterwards ? Or some other organising process??
Then set and follow an agenda, from some or all of the below, and/or any other topics we agree either before or on the day that we want to talk about, after deciding an order of priority
1) UK community psychology conferences: where next? - report back from the Plymouth conference and deciding whether we want another, and if where and organised by whom: so how to take onward planning for the next conference
2) deciding on actions to take forward the proposal to establish a community psychology collective
3) Participation in BPS: what can we do, collectively and inclusively, to ensure that the BPS section is influenced as much possible by the wider community of people with interests in community psychology beyond those who decide to join the BPS section ( remembering that everyone can join; for example one thing we could do collectively is set up a fund to support financially those who might want to join but canlt afford to do so. ANYONE can join the BPS as an associate if they wish to do so, they don't have to be psychology graduates . Addressing the cost , the unwonted formality of the BPS processes and also assumptions of its exclusivity could reduce even if not eliminate any social exclusion from the BPS or from the section . In addition there could be, if we wanted to set it up, a possibility of having a mechanism for influencing the agenda/ dicussions of the BPS section ( NB I note from the proposed rules of the section that members can invite guests to all meetings except annual general meetings or emergency meetings. )
4) critical reflection on how can we deal with power differences, and access to resources, for UK community psychology in a way which is about promoting the interests of those who are currently relatively powerless now that the ( voted for at a community psychology conference ) BPS section is moving ahead.
5) reminding ourselves of of the Birmingham manifesto: can we take collective action by putting together a statement about eg the likely damage of the anticipated public sector cuts; can we join with other organizations if direct action is taken ... ( trying to see the wider picture rather than getting totally bogged down in our own internal struggles) .
6) reminding ourselves of how we have got to this point in the history of community psychology in UK

Hi everyone,
As you may know we have a meeting planned for the morning of 8th October 2010 in London. This is not the inaugral meeting of the BPS CP Section. The morning meeting takes place in the BPS offices in London in advance of the Inaugral Meeting. As far as I am aware there is no agenda for this meeting at the moment, nor to my knowledge a clear idea of what we would like to achieve. Therefore, I ask the following:-
What would you like this meeting to achieve/initiate?
What do you think should be discussed?
Personally, I would like to discuss the suggestion of a CP Cooperative, to identify who has the time and energy to drive the suggestion forward, even if this is initially to identify what appetite there is for the organisation, to pull together the work that has already been done in this vein (ie, draft constitution), how it may operate etc.
Over to you....... and please contribute even (perhaps especially!) if you don't think you can attend.
