Dear Lindsay
The remit of the Data Standards Group does indeed include digital preservation and digitization and we are keen to raise awareness of these areas. We have, in the past, discussed whether there was a need for a separate group to concentrate on these areas. At present, as well as the DSG, there is the Digital Preservation Coalition (http://www.dpconline.org/), of which ARA is a member. This means that all members of ARA are entitled to attend DPC events and use their services. On the online/international front, there is also the Digital Curation Exchange (http://digitalcurationexchange.org). There are also lots of other relevant seminars and conferences around. Our concern is whether the community can sustain another group?
We would be very interested to hear what sort of additional support you had in mind. In fact, the DSG is always keen to hear from members (and potential members!) about what you would like us to provide in the way of training, talks, resources etc. Recently, for example, in response to popular demand, we were involved in putting together the series of digital preservation roadshows. Are there any other events or resources anyone would like? Please do let us know - it's only by hearing from members that we can provide what you want!
We would certainly be interested in seeing any feedback you get, Lindsay.
Best wishes
Victoria

Subject: Calling all Digital Archivists
As a recently qualified Archivist (although I have worked in the Information Management field for nearly 20 years), I am now working as a Digital Archivist and have been trying to identify others working in this area.
I know several people who are members of the Data Standards Group of ARA - is this the best group to support those working in the digital archiving field or could ARA additionally support us as a separate special interest group or maybe another method such as an online community of practice?
Is it divisive to separate those whose jobs focus on Digital Archiving from those Archivists whose job covers all formats of information? Should we be working with all archivists as everyone is likely to be confronted with some digital records when receiving a collection now?
With the formation of ARA, there is an opportunity to influence new support options and I will summarise any responses I get and pass them on to ARA
Please feel free to reply offlist if you prefer
