Dear Tunicate Friends,
Please read this important announcement from Ken Hastings.
Best, Mary Carman

Invasive Species Research at the 6th International Tunicate Meeting,
Montreal, July 3-7 2011

As the organizer for the 6th International Tunicate Meeting (6th ITM) to
be held at McGill University in Montreal July 3-7 2011, I am very
pleased that Mary Carman and Jeff Davidson have agreed to join the
program committee and chair a session on invasive species.

Invasive tunicates, especially ascidians, are a major concern world-wide
and particularly for coastal Canada and the United States. The
occurrence of the 6th ITM, the major international biennial tunicate
research conference, in Montreal Canada provides an excellent
opportunity to highlight the invasive species aspects of tunicate
biology, in addition to the developmental biology, genomics, physiology,
and systematics/evolutionary aspects customarily considered at the ITM.
Mary and Jeff, with their in-depth knowledge of the invasive species
research community, are ideally placed to organize a session focusing on
this topic.

We welcome the active participation of the invasive species research
community to present a strong profile of invasive species research at
the 6th ITM meeting. Needless to say, such a meeting would provide
significant opportunities for constructive interactions across the whole
basic/applied biology spectrum of international tunicate research. The
timing is fortunate in that 2011 is an "off" year for the focussed IISSC
meetings so that there is no direct overlap. To ensure the 6th ITM is a
fun event, our dates overlap with the International Jazz Festival - a
major summer event in Montreal, where everyone finds something to enjoy.
We also plan a July 4 barbecue lunch in honor of our US-based
participants who will be away from home that day.

More information will be forthcoming on conference center lodging
accommodation, registration, and other issues when we mount the ITM
website, but please plan on making your own travel arrangements,
including arrival in Montreal on Saturday July 2 as we will start with a
full day’s program on July 3.

I hope to see you in Montreal next July.

Sincerely,
Ken
