Sounds like a great idea; I have one or two observations related to your own questions:
1. What size/quality will the pics be that finally end up on your site/in your database? Surely the third party site will auto re-size the publicly uploaded images and only allow you to re-display or archive 'manageable' sized pics? Won't you want a repository of full-res surrogate images that can be backed up on site/off-site/in the cloud etc?
2. What happens if the third party site is taken over or goes down, leaving you with a nav structure, tagging system or file naming convention that is unsupportable? [how many of us still use Delicious?]
3. How do you manage captioning and/or alt tag writing across the various systems?
Within the C24 environment, I was always keen to get more access on a systematic/sortable/shareable basis; sounds like using a Flickr or similar interface/API would be really interesting. Can the Flickr discussion be developed into a more complex or linked discourse about developing some tagging systems that are curriculum-linked or geared in some way to standards-based tagging or naming systems?
Yours, from a new office that's not quite all working yet...

Subject: Flickr vs Picasa
Hi
We're working on a project that will involve adding a large number of
images to our website over a short period of time, added directly from
an event at our venue. For security, training and stability reasons, we
think it best to use a third-party image sharing website to add the
images, and then pull them into our website programmatically using an
API.
So, a gallery worker would use the third-party site to:
-- upload images
-- add descriptions
-- add tags (including machine-readable dates)
Our website would:
-- retrieves images based on their tags (including search)
-- display images and associated data in one of our web pages
It seems to me that there are two main options, Flickr and Picasa Web
Albums. Now, obviously, everybody in museums uses/loves Flickr, but
their terms of use (http://www.flickr.com/services/api/tos/
<http://www.flickr.com/services/api/tos/> ) b.vii appear to forbid
"us[ing] Flickr as a generic image hosting service for banner
advertisements, graphics, etc", whereas at a glance Picasa seems both
better designed for this type of activity, and also doesn't require a
specifically authenticated API key to merely retrieve public images.
Does anyone have similar experience/any suggestions about which option
would be better?
Thanks
Danny
