There's an easier way to do it if you've got a shib2 IdP handy, use aacli, e.g:
./aacli.sh --principal=alswiffin --configDir=../conf --requester=https://sh2testsp1.iay.org.uk/shibboleth --issuer=https://idp.dundee.ac.uk/shibboleth --saml1
works nicely.
