Hi Gunner,
I cannot speak for others but I would say that what we do by way of 'testing' is not design research. It's the application of routine investigative procedures in design practice. Perhaps I should have made it clearer. We have discovered through our *actual* design research that this type of routine testing is best done by the designers themselves. In our practice, they learn to do it as a normal part of routine professional practice. Designers do this 'testing' in order to support their practice, and as part of their practice. I don't know with any certainty what other designers or researchers do or pretend to do. But I do know what you are referring to, and I agree.
Sadly Carlton lost to Geelong tonight.
Warm wishes to all from a cold Melbourne
David
