I think the opening statement misses the point of online collections, and I disagree about the impossibility of having a "museum experience". I am arguing just the opposite in my thesis, and believe that the possibilities opened up by social media, in all it's many and varied forms, offer a genuine, different and connected experience of a museum. The influence of the web and social media extends to a change in what we expect of museums and what museums can expect of themselves - just like print media, the impact of these technologies feeds into society entirely, and museums are no exception.
Museums and the web are mutually influencing / interconnected. Someone following a museum on Twitter, for example, is to some degree engaged in an intimate and offer roving relationship with that institution.
Or maybe I have missed the point! It was an interesting blog, nevertheless.
