Gaming in Libraries: A survey of activities in the UK
We are carrying out a survey to provide a picture of the extent of
support for games and gaming in all types of UK libraries. Gaming in
libraries can be controversial, especially with current financial
constraints. However, there is currently little evidence about the
provision of gaming resources and activities (electronic and
traditional) or about the potential benefits and difficulties of
promoting gaming in libraries.
We would be grateful if you would spend a few minutes completing the
short questionnaire available at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VGWZKKM
All responses will be treated in confidence and only used for the
purposes of this research project. Respondents will not be identified
in reports or analysis of the data. If you have any queries about the
survey or would like to receive a copy of the findings, please email

Many thanks in advance for your help. The closing date for responses
is 31st August 2010.
Background information
Since 2007, the Library Game Lab at Syracuse has been collecting data
about gaming in libraries in the United States. This survey is an
attempt to collect similar data for the UK. Many of the questions are
based on those devised by Scott Nicholson and his colleagues (see
http://gamelab.syr.edu/), with some adaptations for a UK audience.
The idea for this UK survey came about through discussions between Sarah
McNicol and Carl Cross following the publication of a special edition of
Library Review on ‘Web 2.0 and Gaming in Libraries’
(http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?issn=0024-2535&volume=58&issue=3&PHPSESSID=kj81c2papofnn9mmniaj70inc6)
which Sarah edited and Carl contributed an article to.
Many thanks
Sarah
