Dear all,
many many thanks for the input and ideas so far. I guess I have
unintendedly touched the right topic to get a huge discussion going, my
sincere apologies for doing so :-)
So, what I learned so far is that even though many theories apply to
what we observe in garnets, yet there is no definite answer.
I will go a step further and throw a plot of some HREE in a ~600µm
diameter garnet grain into the round, which also shows some neat little
shoulders around the center peak. As you will notice, there are no
distinct peaks near the rim of the garnet, so presumably garnet
resorption and re-growth did not occur (much of the little zig zag in
the flat spectrum is caused by the laser analysis itself).
As for the interest in REE, I personally am interested especially in the
Lu-profiles, since these are needed for a proper interpretation of Lu-Hf
ages.
cheers,
Alexander
