Graphical Abstract
► Social drinkers at bars showed more perseveration on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test at higher blood alcohol concentrations (BAC). ► The effect was specific to perseverative errors; non-perseverative errors were not related to BAC. ► BAC, but not measures of trait impulsivity, typical alcohol consumption or frontal lobe related dysfunction in everyday life, predicted perseverative errors. ► There were no BAC limb effects. ► Alcohol-related perseveration may reflect inhibition of prefrontal cortex by alcohol-induced dopamine release from the mesocortical dopamine system.

Graphical Abstract
► The smoking and depression association differed by gender in Chinese Americans. ► Gender difference in depression was observed in Chinese current smokers only. ► In females, current smokers were more depressed than never and former smokers. ► Male current smokers had more depressive symptoms than male former smokers only. ► Depression can be a key issue in Chinese American smokers especially in females.
