Call for Abstracts for Session: “Science-Policy-Media Literacy”
(session organizer: Dr. Conny Davidsen, University of Calgary)
Science, policy and media represent an increasingly dynamic triangular
interface that poses new challenges to research, education and policy
practice. While for science-policy connections it has been widely found
that political culture has an influential role in shaping the politics of
science and technology from priorities to interpretation and enabling
mechanisms such as funding, the new technological and globalized spheres
of media influences in the interface are taking the challenges of
politicized and media-processed representations of social and
environmental realities to a new level that has yet to be grasped,
translated and communicated into academic education and training.
Latin America represents a particularly rich and challenging context of
science-policy-media dynamics in environmental and social issues from
climate change to social justice, indigenous movements, health, poverty,
resource degradation, and environmental conflict that will be the focus of
the session. The session seeks to identify effective ways of re-directing
current educational approaches to the changing conditions that the new
generation of scholars, policy practitioners, and citizens is facing.
The call for abstracts invites critical contributions that reflect on the
status quo and potentials of epistemologically and politically literate
approaches in post-secondary education, including inter-, trans-, and
multi-disciplinary teaching approaches; case studies on
science-policy-media interfaces that can be used as research examples in
the classroom; teaching with or about new information and communication
technologies (ICTs) toward media literacy; and innovative ways to connect
the three spheres in teaching and public communication.
There are a few spots available in the session.
Abstract submission deadline: Monday Sept 13
Notification of acceptance: Monday Sept 20
