As Barry mentions Clostridium perfringens (the causitive agent of Gangreen) is ubiquitous in soil and faeces and is a known human pathogen. Like other Clostridium Sp. it is anaerobic, i.e. it lives in environments absent in oxygen, some can tolerate low levels of oxygen in soils, this means that there occurance and distribution in soil will depend on oxygen concentrations within the soil (or any other matrix) that they live in. Clostridia are also spore forming (a reproductive structure that is adapted for surviving for extended periods of time in unfavorable conditions) which also makes it harder to enumerate. So you could be expected to find Clostridium perfringens in many different environments in the UK but cfu/g concentrations will be very much dependent on local factors.

I can't quote you a paper off-hand but Clostridium perfringens is ubiquitous in soils, and also in faeces. It *might* be absent in places like the Arctic or the Sahara, but the only safe assumption in the UK is that it's present. Why?
