Dear All
I am currently in the process of cataloguing the archive of Mary Hamilton held at The John Rylands University Library, The University of Manchester. The collection is being catalogued in a project funded by a generous contribution from the Wolfson Foundation as part of the National Cataloguing Grants Programme for Archives.
The archive comprises 16 autograph diaries, 6 manuscript volumes and upwards of 3,000 pages of notes and letters. Mary Hamilton (1756-1816) was a courtier and diarist. She was a friend of many of the prominent Bas Bleau (the bluestocking circle) and literary figures such as Mary Delany, Elizabeth Montegu and Fanny Burney. She corresponded with court figures such as Queen Charlotte, the Princesses and the Royal Governess Lady Charlotte Finch. Her diaries offer a wealth of information on her wide ranging intellectual interests, in her literary tastes and in her interest in art.
I am writing this blog to document the cataloguing process and via it I also hope to share information about the interesting items I find within the collection.
