Job Title Statistical Project lead - Real Time Syndromic Surveillance

Division Local and Regional Services

Unit HPA West Midlands

Accountable to: Consultant Epidemiologist (Real Time Syndromic Surveillance)

Salary: 38,851- 46,621

Grade: Band 8a

Location: Central West Midlands

Hours: 37.5

We are an independent body that protects the health and well-being of the population. The Agency plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur. We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-terrorist attack or virulent new strain of disease.

Applications are sought for this newly created statistical project lead post to direct, develop and manage the statistical components of the real-time syndromic (use of timely pre-diagnostic data) surveillance systems, particularly in preparation for the 2012 Olympics.

The purpose of this job is to be the statistical project lead for directing, managing and delivering the statistical components of existing national real time syndromic surveillance systems and for developing additional national systems in response to service needs. The real time syndromic surveillance team provides a service in both providing early alerts to health protection incidents and real time data and interpretation in the event of a serious health protection incident (e.g. infectious disease outbreak, environmental incident). This post involves a range of complex and original scientific work and requires a high degree of personal motivation. The post holder is expected to identify opportunities for future research in liaison with scientific and medical colleagues across the HPA, and supervise scientific staff within this area

Educated to post-graduate level in mathematics, statistics or a relevant scientific subject with substantial statistical content, coupled with appropriate project management skills, you should be highly motivated and committed to developing your skills within the health protection field. You will have a record of having identified and solved complex statistical problems and communicated ideas and methods clearly and succinctly.

You will have experience of innovation, of preparing and delivering written reports and verbal presentations. You will have a record of publications in peer reviewed journals and experience of preparing bids for external funding for research.

For an informal discussion regarding this post please contact Gillian Smith (Consultant Epidemiologist, Real Time Syndromic Surveillance) on 01213525553.
