That's one easy option yes, but I thought it might be nice for them to
have a 'space' where they can do lots of different things e.g. like you
can in Huddle/Basecamp as well as just share documents.
But Google docs is certainly an option.

Google Docs?
Lots of people have access already so no username/password trouble and
it's geared for anyone to be able to use.
