Dear All,
Many of you will know that the twenty-third
Colloquium of African Geology (CAG23) will be
held in Johannesburg between January 8 and 14
next year. This is a pan-continental meeting run
by the Geological Society of Africa. The meeting
web site is:
http://www.cag23.co.za/
I am writing to let potential participants know
that, following the meeting in Johannesburg,
there is another meeting that may be of interest.
Every year, the hard-rock petrology community in
South Africa holds IMSG - The Igneous and
Metamorphic Studies Group meeting. 2011 will see
the third of these gatherings and this time it
will be held at the University of Stellenbosch on
16 to 19 January 2011.
The programme will include:
16th - evening icebreaker reception
17th and 18th scientific sessions with both
student and academic research presentations and
invited talks
19th - bus field trip (for up to 40 people, led
by Prof. Gary Stevens) to see the fascinating
garnet-cordierite-biotite S-type granites of the
Peninsula Pluton*, including arguably the worlds
most spectacular coastal drive and an evening
meal at one of the wine farms.
Full details will follow later.
What will be the cost, you ask? Well,
registration is free. The field trip will be
nearly free. All you have to fund is travel to
Cape Town Airport and thence to Stellenbosch,
plus your accommodation in Stellenbosch. You can
fly from Jo'burg to CT for about US$200, stlgŁ130
or ¤160.
For those who don't know, historic Stellenbosch
is the oldest European settlement in inland
Africa, situated amid the stunning scenery of the
mountains of the Cape Fold Belt and forming the
centre of the famous Western Cape wine industry,
with lovely vineyards, some dating to the middle
of the 17th century (yes, the mid 1600s).
Stellenbosch is close to Cape Town and very easy
to get to. If you are participating in CAG23, why
not prolong your stay in South Africa and visit
the very different Western Cape? Go on, it's
nearly free and we'd love to welcome you here.
If you are interested, please let either myself or Gary Stevens know:
