Focus Group: The Digital Archive
How are digital archives used in contemporary research? Does the process of
digitisation alter our relationship with the material? And what, exactly, is
an archive: a space for storing authoratative knowledge, a place of memory,
or an echo of the past..?
Where: University of East London, Docklands Campus
Date: July/August 2010
Time: TBC
Room: TBC
Facilitator: Joseph Dunne (Research Assistant, University of East London)
CEDAR (Clustering and Enhancing Digital Archives for Research) is a JISC
funded project researching how digital archives can aid teaching and learning
in higher education using a pre-existing online archive, ELTA (East London
Theatre Archive), a collection of theatre ephemera from theatre's across east
London.
As part of my role as research assistant with the project I am organising a
research session with archivists and those in the academic community to
informally discuss the debates surrounding digitisation, interactivity,
contextualisation and paradigm shifts in the field, how archives are used in
contemporary research and their influence on teaching and learning. This will
be held at the University of East London's docklands campus; the session
shouldn't last longer than an hour and we will provide refreshments. If you
would be interested in attending, or would like to know more about the
project, please contact me at [log in to unmask] or on (020) 8223 3000 ext.
6310.
As stated above there is no definite date yet so if you could forward me
dates when you would be available I will arrange a time and date to suit
everyone.
Kind regards,
Joseph Dunne
