Hi Jayne
From an NHS perspective we have to retain deceased patient records for 8
full years if they died whilst receiving care.
If a patient dies and they are not receiving care then we would follow
the normal retention periods depending on the specialty.
GPs have to keep their deceased records for 10 full years. This
includes Military personnel and prisoners
Death - Cause of, Certificate counterfoils have to be retained for 2
full years.
Death registers - i.e. register of deaths kept by the hospital, where
they exist in paper format - Lists are now sent to GRO on a monthly
basis therefore retain for 2 full years but Death registers prior to
lists being sent to GRO are to be offered to a Place of Deposit
We obviously don't have financial implications
Kind Regards
Alison

Subject: Retention Query
I wonder if anyone could help me.
I have been asked what the retention period would be for burial records.
Where the local council has organised and paid for for the funeral and
dealt with the estate. Expenses are deducted from the estate and the
rest is forwarded onto the state. The council will have the personal
effects and financial information relating to the individual. How long
should this information be held for?
My initial thoughts are current + 6 years as it relates to financial
information but am not too sure whether other factors should be
considered.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
