For those of you interested this quote was most widely reported after it was used by the magical Irish rugby captain Brian O'Driscoll. I would like to think he was the originator although that may not be true.

"'Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad."

O'Driscoll's widely-quoted philosophical musing when asked to give his view on former Lions team mate and current England manager, Martin Johnson, ahead of Ireland's Six Nations Championship clash with England at Croke Park on 28th February 2009.

Probably it should be contrasted with the utterings of famous footballers.

It's a game of two halves

I love Blackpool. We're very similar. We both look better in the dark -Ian hollaway

Football's like a big marketplace and people go to the market every day to buy their vegetables. -Sir Bobby Robson

I definitely want Brooklyn to be christened, but I don't know into what religion yet. (guess who said that?)

Thanks Graeme,

Excellent definition, cheers.

I was talking about this thread with the team and someone came up with the following to introduce the additional complexity of re-use:

"I would suggest data is a raw material while information is a processed material. In analogy, both Iron and Carbon are data and can be put together to produce information in the form of steel. However steel itself eventually becomes considered raw material, becoming data again and can be put together with other data to produce a more complex processed item such as a car."

Hope that muddles the waters further!

Best,
Mark

I like that Bob. And then there's the difference between knowledge and wisdom, often illustrated by the following (don't know who to credit for this I'm afraid but I love it):

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

Clare,

Mark has already noted how slippery a topic this is. I usually illustrate what /I/ see as the difference between Data, Information and Knowledge
thus:

Data: 75mph

Information (data in context of a situation): the speed of the car I'm in

Knowledge: (information in relation to a required action or decision):
we're
exceeding the speed limit!

Max Boisot has a neat model showing his view of the differences in a cognitive psychological sense. I discussed his model briefly in an article for FUMSI recently: http://web.fumsi.com/go/article/manage/4471.

I don't suppose that helps much in an RM context, but I thought I'd respond anyway.

Hope you find the Holy Grail...

Regards,

Bob

Subject: definition of "data"

Hi all,

I speedily need a definition of data in the modern RM context ie I don't imagine any of us see "data" any more as "Information in numerical form that can be digitally transmitted or processed" (Webster).

Any suggestions? My own definition preference is that it's "information in a digital format, possibly structured", though I'm willing to drop the "structured" bit as well to make sure all digital stuff is captured.
