medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
While we're waiting for Terri's saints to come through (or not, if the problem persists), here's a little something I did have ready for today.
Today, 12. July 2010, being the second Monday in July this year, is the feast day of:
Palmerius (d. ca. 304, supposedly). The very poorly documented P. (in Sardinian, Paraminu and Paramezi; in Italian, Palmerio) is a Sardinian saint unknown to early martyrologies and the like. He has been venerated in Sardinia since at least twelfth century, most notably at today's Ghilarza/Bilartzi (OR), where a church property named for him is known from the 1160s onward and where the originally earlier thirteenth-century chiesa di San Palmerio replaced an earlier chapel of the same dedication. On 8. July 1750 remains announced as being those of P. were found in this church. Local tradition (seemingly post-medieval in origin) makes him a martyr of the Great Persecution.
Until fairly recently P.'s feast day was the anniversary of his eighteenth-century Inventio; now, like St. Platanus venerated at Villaspeciosa and St. Greca of Decimomannu, he has a moveable feast concurrent with a civic celebration. In P.'s case, this celebration extends beyond Ghilarza to Bortigali/Bortigale (NU), where he is also celebrated on the second Monday of July. P. has yet to grace the pages of the RM.

PS: In the category of stray notes about Google, it may be worth observing that a simple search in Google for 'Bilartzi' (the standard form in Sardinian for what in Italian is 'Ghilarza') is always answered with the helpful query "Did you mean: Bilharzia".
