Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery in Brecon and the Believe Collective are
very happy to announce the launch of the first phase of 'Ayo Gorkhali!' (
http://www.ayo-gorkhali.org) - an online educational resource that
celebrates the history and legacy of the British Gurkhas. The project takes
its name from the Gurkha battle cry, ‘Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gorkhali!’ (‘Victory
to goddess Mahakali, the Gurkhas are here!').
The site features a unique interactive Timeline covering 2,800 years of
Nepali (Nepalese) and Gurkha history:

and also archive photos and clips from an educational DVD produced for one
of the project's sponsors, the Gurkha Museum Winchester.
The 'Ayo Gorkhali' site is the latest outcome from the 'Ayo Gorkhali' (AG)
project which Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery and the Believe Collective
have been developing for the last 3 years, funded by Inspiring Learning for
All grants from CyMAL. The AG project began with a community engagement and
exhibition project in Brecon that culminated in the very successful 'Ayo
Gorkhali!' exhibition (see our short 'Brecon Freedom
Parade<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3baq5_YqbY&feature=player_embedded>'
film on YouTube). The AG project is also running an online Nepal-Wales
schools linkup project.
The 'Ayo Gorkhali' site is managed using the popular open-source Joomla
Content Management System and uses custom-built webservices to deliver
content via the Flash Timeline. The site has also been designed to deliver a
great experience on mobile devices such as Apple's iPhone/iPod and Android
phones.
