Dear all,
My name is Rachel Elrod and I am an intern at the Cairo Institute for
Human Rights Studies. I am contacting you in the hope that you will have
some means of remedying a situation I encountered en route to Cairo.
Two weeks ago, I spoke with some Somali refugees in the Moscow airport
during my layover there. It seems that they paid an individual posing as
a legitimate human rights worker to assist them in their effort to go to
Canada and file for asylum. They were told that once in Russia, they
would receive temporary visas that would allow them to legally fly to
Canada.
These 16 individuals have been living in the Moscow airport for nearly
three months now, with no access to resources for food or medical
assistance, and are being pressured to return to Somalia. I realize that
this is a growing problem in international airports, but am hopeful that
something can be done for them. One of the men I spoke with expressed
his fear at the prospect of returning to Somalia, and said that they had
all expended the entirety of their resources in the hope of a more
secure life in Canada.
Is there anything you can do to assist them? Thank you in advance for
your time, and I look forward to your response.

Rachel Elrod
