re:Tobii portability
With a background in reading with remote ASL 504, I was impressed with the ease of Tobii; But now that I'm looking at writing, a camera which is independent (we are using a head-mounted EyeLink2) is better for capturing behaviors requiring hand movements which can block the Tobiii fixed remote camera. Tobii has a video on Youtube explaining how to set it up under the table for recording eyes during cell phone use, but it does not seem easy. Big rule before buying is always try to anticipate any new applications, of course.

Hi,
In my research on social attention in Autism Spectrum Disorders, I have used three separate SMI eye tracking systems, including the RED, and while their sampling rate is decent, the idea that they are portable is seriously questionable. We bought our systems in 2006, so unless SMI have made major modifications then I do not agree that they are portable. I have seen the Tobii Systems in use, and sugest that they are much more suitable for research with clinical populations where you need to travel around with the eye tracker. I am considering buying a Tobii System myself.

Hi,
ease of use has become an integral part of system solutions for all major eye tracking manufacturers, although it is a quite relative measure and need to be understood in context of experience and expectation of the user.
Simply expect tailored system solutions and performance from all premium eye tracking manufacturers.
Whereas the spatial accuracy, head motion compensation, calibration, tracking stability, binocularity, headbox, system usability and software ergonomics etc. is quite close based on comparable technological and architectural approaches; the temporal resolution really matters depending on targeted eye movements and related event data.
Therefore the SMI RED remote eyetracking solution supports sampling rates at 60, 120 or 250Hz at users choice.
Sampling rates of 60 or 120Hz are good enough for fixation tracking and visualization of scanpaths, attention maps etc.
Sampling rates of 250Hz mode allow for higher level of oculomotoric measures when e.g. saccadic measures are of interest.
Low speed fixation tracker (data sampling below 200Hz) simply provide too few data points to precisely measure saccades and depending calculation of temporal derivatives (acceleration, angular velocities) of position measure.
Another practical differentiator is the formfactor and flexibility:
SMI RED system can be attached to a monitor or used as stand-alone system with the same device. Change of mode takes 1 minute. The RED system can be configured accordingly to experiment scenario without involving multiple devices.
Really the best system choice or recommendation always depends on the task and must respect the expected measures.
Talk to the manufacturers, request proof of concept and claims, and of course get consultation from peers.

Hi,
The Tobii T120 or the Tobii X120 are very easy to use and also allow for head movements during the recording.
While the T120 is very hidden within a screen the X120 offers more flexibility.
Both systems have a samplingrate of 120 Hz.
Tobii eye trackers are the most sold and used in academic research world wide.
Best regards,
Robertino Pereira

Hi,
You may have a look at SMI RED system. It has 250 Hz sampling rate and is
very easy to use.

Ramesh
