PhD Research Studentship:
History and Health Inequalities
SPHS10/357
University of Glasgow
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a good honours degree
or a Masters in history or in another relevant subject with a strong
interest in history to train in a leading research establishment. The
studentship represents a stepping-stone to a rewarding research-based or
academic career. Having a relevant research Masters degree would be
desirable; however, funding will include completing a relevant Masters
degree prior to starting the PhD if the successful candidate does not
already have one. The financial support provided includes a maintenance
stipend of £13,590 per annum. This studentship will investigate the
historical context of the lives of three cohorts from the West of
Scotland Twenty-07 Study and how this has shaped their health.
The studentship could contain three different components:
o a review of the social, economic and cultural history of Clydeside as
it would have impacted on our three cohorts;
o comparative analyses of Twenty-07 data as evidence of the changing
social and economic circumstances of the three cohorts over time;
o oral histories with people in each of the three Twenty-07 cohorts to
understand their lived experiences and how these have influenced their
health.
The project will be supervised by Michaela Benzeval (MRC/CSO SPHSU,
Glasgow) and Professor Marguerite Dupree (the Centre for the History of
Medicine at Glasgow University).
