Why not try the old acid test on it to see if it is indeed a calcareous matrix (not that law abiding geologists would ever dream of doing such things anymore...!)

From asking around .....
"I can't really do better than 'calcareous concretion' - possibly from the Late Jurassic? There is an outside chance that the concretion was nucleated on an ammonite, but I can't really see any biological structure."

Climate Change Tip: Use FSC charcoal on your BBQ!
The UK imports over 90% of its charcoal, and a significant proportion comes from logging in tropical forests in Africa and South America. Next time you BBQ, do your bit to reduce climate change by using only FSC certified charcoal. Sacks displaying the Forest Stewardship Council logo come from sustainably managed UK woodland. Available from most large supermarkets and DIY stores. For more information visit www.foe.co.uk/living/tips/bbqs_and_butterflies.html

I don't think its an ammonite as whorls spiral from the centre, that appears to be a central circular formation surrounded by a larger ring
I was also thinking grind stone
Are there any mills in the area, what kind of open cast site is it,
Thanks

Afternoon everyone
One perhaps for all the historians, geologists or archaeologists out there I think. The artefact/relic in the attached photo was uncovered at a Brownfield site near Tibshelf in east Derbyshire recently, and the jury is out on identifying what it actually is.
<<IMG_1831.jpg>>
All sensible suggestions gratefully requested (we've already had the fossilised flying saucer, roman spinning top, chariot wheel suggestions!). The best idea we have so far is that it is an ammonite. I've got sketchy and basic geological knowledge, but I thought ammonites were more rough/ridged on their surface - unless this has been smoothed by physical processes.
The site is a former railway siding/engine shed, which is now undergoing open casting.
Kind regards
Matt Petitt
