There is the 9 Men's morris game on Sparsholt, Oxfordshire wall? Presumably
scratched in before the block was used in the church when the block was on
the ground. Medieval tea break? Would make a nice scene in bonekickers

During the excavation of Coventry's Benedictine Priory (1999-2002) we
found graffiti on one of the piers. It was simply doodles or attempts at
copying letters by illiterate workman during demolition perhaps but must
have been made between disolution and middle of 1600s. In Whitefriars,
Coventry, we have some nice doodles and names of weavers who lived there
in the 18th century.

Subject: [BRITARCH] Church graffiti
No, not the usual whinge about delinquent youths with spray paint - but
a request for information. I'm currently working on aspects of medieval
graffiti found in churches. The emphasis is upon East Anglia but I'd
also be interested in hearing from further afield. Has anyone come
across any? I've been through Pritchard's 'English Medieval Graffiti'
(1967) which contains a great deal - but it is sadly outdated. It only
has two references for Norfolk (there are at least eight examples within
five miles of my home) and much of the interpretation requires
'amendment'. I'd just be very interested in hearing from anyone, on or
off-list, who has come across examples. On a lighter note, we recently
came across a rather stunning example in Lakenheath church. On one side
of the pier is a rather lovely 15th century prayer to St Michael - on
the other (luckily inscribed in chalk) the immortal legend 'skins rule'.
