I would be grateful if this opportunity could be drawn to the attention
of potential candidates. The thesis will be co-supervised by Professor
Jonathan Van-Tam and myself and is a unique opportunity to follow up
some important issues presented by the recent pandemic while memories
are fresh.
School of Community Health Sciences - Division of Epidemiology & Public
Health - Health Protection Research Group
ESRC/MRC Joint Funded Interdisciplinary PhD Studentship
An investigation of health professionals' non-uptake of H1N1 pandemic
influenza vaccine during the 2009 pandemic
Applications are invited for the above PhD studentship funded jointly by
the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Medical Research
Council in support of interdisciplinary research. The studentship will
be based in the HPA/University of Nottingham Health Protection Research
Group situated within the Division of Epidemiology & Public Health at
The University of Nottingham.
The student will join a very active group of researchers in the field of
influenza, covering epidemiological, clinical, social and bioethical
aspects of disease control. The group benefits from very senior input
from social scientists as well as epidemiologists, clinicians and
virologists. The successful student will consider current bioethical
thinking about the duty of care and its relationship to social
scientific work on the values and cultures of health professionals.
Original research studies will be performed to examine the reasoning of
health professionals who accepted and rejected the offer of vaccination
against H1N1 pandemic influenza. The implications for public policy will
be discussed. The work may encompass an international element (subject
to confirmation). The studentship would suit either a candidate with a
health background, and a demonstrable strong interest in social aspects
of health; or a social scientist with demonstrable strong interests in
health.
In addition to a good first degree (1st class Hons or high 2.1),
applicants must already have a UK Masters level qualification (or
recognised equivalent) in the last 5 years, in epidemiology, public
health or the social sciences. This must have included substantial
training in Research Methods. All candidates are required to have
established UK residency (as defined by ESRC) at the time of
application.
Candidates are strongly advised to contact Prof Jonathan Van-Tam (Email:
[log in to unmask]) to discuss the project prior to submitting an
application. Candidates should also look at the 'Person Specification'
(insert link here!).
The successful student will register for a PhD from Autumn 2010 and will
receive a tax-free stipend for three years at published ESRC rates,
payment of tuition fees, and an allowance for travel/conference
attendance . Stipends may only be paid to HEU students who meet ESRC
residential eligibility requirements. A fees-only award could be
provided for eligible EU students who do not satisfy the basic
residential eligibility requirements.
Students should send (preferably by Email) a detailed CV, together with
a letter of application and the names and contact details of two
referees, to Mr. Craig Butterworth, Centre Administrator for the UKCTCS,
Room B103, Division of Epidemiology and Public Health, Clinical Sciences
Building, City Hospital, Hucknall Road, Nottingham, NG5 1PB. Email:
[log in to unmask] Students should cite the title of
the project in all communications.
Please quote ref. ES/H045546/1 in all correspondence. Closing date: 1700
BST, 5th July 2010. Interviews will be held in mid-late July 2010.
