My chosen field is Elementary Education and to me recognizing and respecting others beliefs if very important in this field as well as in life in general. I’ve only taken one special education class prior to this one and I have definitely learned much more in this class. I never knew of all the specific struggles that people with disabilities face in relation to being able to support themselves and fighting for the equality that they deserve.
Since I’m an education major I think it will be important for me to show the students in my classes that people with disabilities are just the same as we are and deserve to be treated equally and with respect. They are capable of taking care of themselves and strive for the same things that we do in our lives. Had I known about this when I was a young student I would have grown up looking at individuals with disabilities differently.
When I was in school students that had disabilities were seldom seen and if there were any in my school they were kept in the Special Education classes. Had they been integrated much like they are starting today, me along with my classmates would have had a better understanding of them and realized that they were just like us. Since they were kept separate it made us look at them as though they were different from us and we did not socialize with them. To me this is sad and I’m glad now that I’ve had the chance to be around people with disabilities and learn more about them through this class. I hope to inform as many people as I can about the struggles those with disabilities face on a day to day basis. If we start with the younger generation they can then begin to change the way the world views others.
