This perspective’s class regarding discrimination and oppression of disabled people has opened my eyes in several ways. For instance, I now have a greater appreciation for people with disabilities. Personally, I grew up with my disabled uncle close to me. I have understood disabilities from my uncle, but now I feel that I have a better understanding. This understanding will benefit me in several ways for the future.
In the next two years I will be finished my education at Millersville University, and will hopefully be teaching kindergarten aged children. This specific class was beneficial to me for several reasons regarding my future. To begin with, this class was eye opening to personal accounts of disabled people. Reading the specific articles assigned throughout this course opened my eyes to the personal accounts of real-life situations. It is important to regard a person with disabilities as more than just a label. The readings we were assigned through this course opened my eyes to this idea of understanding a person for who they truly are, rather than who they are labeled to be. This course and its information also prepared me for my future in a classroom. When I am a teacher in the future, I will be surrounded by children with varied learning abilities and disabilities. This class, along with my other classes at Millersville University, have prepared me for accepting and understanding my potential future students. It is important to understand your students in order to enhance a personal relationship with each and every student. In order to create and maintain that specific relationship, you must first truly understand that child. Understanding a child starts with understanding the cause and effects of something. This course has helped open my eyes more to the importance of this idea.
Finally, this course increased my knowledge of the importance of recognizing and respecting people with disabilities. My understanding of this aspect of disabilities will positively affect me personally, but will also affect the way that my future students react to disabilities. For instance, teachers have highly influential affects on their students. Specifically, as a result of my understanding, recognition and respect of people with disabilities, my future students will hopefully share the same behavior. I plan on teaching children about disabilities at a young age in order to gain acceptance and respect early on. It is important to remember the effects of the saying, “monkey see, monkey do”.
