Clinicians are diagnosing vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency more than ever before, thanks to the easy availability of a blood test. We, like most of you, have seen soaring demand for serum vitamin D measurement for all sorts of things ranging from musculoskeletal, psychiatric, GIT, gynaecological ..etc complaints. From the hundreds of samples that we have vitamin D measured on them, it is uncommon to see vitamin D levels above 20 ug/L. The literature suggests that more than 60% of UK population are vitamin D deficient or insufficient. This is one vitamin deficiency of public health dimension, so should we really continue measuring vitamin D levels, or just mass supplement the whole population with 800-1000 IU daily? Which is more cost effective and clinically safe to pursue?
Your opinion is as ever most welcome.
Best regards
Mohammad
