Hi Tyrone
It might be worth looking at some of the work being carried out (with
partners in local authorities and industry) by Nottingham University in this
area.
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/eportfolio/index.shtml
Their philosophy is very much that the eportfolio is user owned and through
web servives can be made available to other applications such as assessment,
IAG and CV building. Such sapplications could be VLE based. They are also
focussing very much on 'trust mechanisms' that give the owner power to
control the access to his/ her information.
The SAMSON project on the above web site provides an example of the use of
their approach.
Their work might not provide an instant solution for you but could provide
the context in which you can make a credible decision.
All the best
Clive

Cheers Matt
This is all very useful.
The more flexible the e-portfolio the better.
I was very impressed with Ray's links as well, the diagrams clearly showed
the possibilities of e-portfolios. Let's be honest we don't seem to be
anywhere near using it to its full potential yet.
Anymore feedback is very welcome, especially with staff using them as tutors
and so forth.
Cheers Again
Ty

Apologies for not replying to this post sooner, but I was tied up in
meetings on Friday.
Speaking from our own experience as a provider of e-portfolios, it is
absolutely possible to achieve both these days...i.e. an e-portfolio system
that both provides the institution with the aggregated views that they need
to track and assess student work, whilst still giving the student access to
their own e-portfolio that is theirs for life and simply 'plug-ins' to the
institution's view.
This is all achieved through the use of web-services...the portfolio is
simply a service that can be linked to any other web-service, including
other services that the student wants to link/access through their
e-portfolio, such as Facebook for example.
This approach also means that the e-portfolio can be integrated with other
institution web-services based systems, such as the VLE, where you can
simply take modules from the e-portfolio and integrate these into the VLE.
We've already done quite a bit of work in this area combining elements of
our e-portfolio system such as our on-screen marking tool - Red Pen Tool
(allows you to mark and annotate any digital file through a browser -
PowerPoint's, Word files, videos, audios) and integrate this within Moodle
for example.
This is all possible now, and it all comes down to the approach taken...and
web-services is the key!
I hope that this is helpful.

There I was thinking I was just behind in the e-learning world!
When I spoke to the tutor, it is clear the e-portfolios are for academic
assessment, as well as future showcasing. I don't know who is setting this
standard as such, but I think I may need to talk to the External Verifiers
(who are uncouraging that more course use this layout & E-portfolios). I
would think that they should be able to offer some guidance, guide lines or
good practice seen elsewhere.

Ty

Tyrone, and Mike,
These are some of the issues I intend addressing at the EIfEL conference and
again in Boston, Ma, next month. See:
http://www.epforum.eu/
http://www.aaeebl.org/page/AAEEBL+Annual+Conference
My short answer if not very helpful is the anecdote about the farmhand's
response to the tourist asking for directions, "If you are going there, I
wouldn't start from here!"
But seriously, the first issue is that of whether the e-Portfolio is deemed
to be primarily an institution-owned assessment tool or is it something
owned by the learner?
If the e-Portfolio is embedded within a VLE then, as you identify, there are
serious problems not only about 'longevity', 'ownership' and 'portability'
but also about showcasing and continued PDP.
If the e-Portfolio is learner-owned then there needs to be some agreement on
uniformity otherwise you create an impossible job for peers, tutors, mentors
and assessors. I do not feel that cloud solutions or Wordpress meet the
wider variety of e-Portfolio functionalities including such things as audit
trails, feedback tools etc.
I'm not trying to sell a product, but see my links below, particularly my
blog.

Hiya,
This is not going to help much, but we've managed to avoid the issue
somewhat because undergrad students have enough to do completing a clinical
portfolio. Now we're trying to move forward with some kind of e-portfolio I
am leaning towards offering them to use the (fairly nasty) VLE-based
platform or some support for them to 'do it themselves' via tumblr or
wordpress... or even a shared dropbox folder with word docs inside. In this
way we could ensure students take responsibility for their own portfolio....
may even promote ownership/engagement with the reflective process (which is
what we ought to really be concerned about, right?). It's also portable and
durable in a way that I have yet to trust classic e-portfolio systems to be.
Best wishes,
Mike

Dear All
I am contacting you in the hope of finding out how you deal
with E-Portfolios
A colleague has insisted that he wants this academic years
course code left ‘live’ for another 1 / 2 years, so that the
students can show potential employers and for the purpose of external
verifiers. Some of my concerns are the continued access of the college
system
by students, and the time required to remove the support courses from their
profile.
We don’t host our own Blackboard area, and I
can’t seem to find a way of exporting the students work / assignments
/
e-portfolio. The Grade centre results aren’t going to be enough.
I am also worried that the cost of our Blackboard will go up
with the amount of users.
So my question is how do you tackle E-portfolios, do you use
blackboard or another source/method? Any advice at all is much appreciated.
Many, many thanks
Ty
