Using Bibliographic Databases and Internet Search Tools
to Conduct Academic Research:
Some Thoughts for a Discussion Group Discourse.

Trying to complete a post like this on Monday morning from 5:30 on is not
a good idea as a system reboot at Temple is breathing down my neck.
Hence the original version of this post got out without proof reading so
that it would not be lost. This revision attempts to make the post more
readable.

Some Thoughts for a Discussion Group Discourse.

This post was sent to an academic discussion group regarding the use of
the that academic list to request information on research topics. This
is a reponse to a post from one poster who wanted to explore the reseearch
skills that members of the list have for finding sources on their research
topics themselves. Below are some observations that I made to this group
of academic professionals regarding these matters.

-------------------------------------

It is my experience that little or nothing is taught in many if not most
elementary and secondary education skills regarding the use of
bibliographic databases for research. In a world within the United States
of teaching to the test and No Child Left Behind, little is taught
regarding the skills of learning let alone the skills of using electronic
databases for research. In the contact that I have had with undergraduate
college programs, I have seen little content regarding searching technique
in the commercial databases that academic libraries spend a great deal of
money to acquire. In using these databases, students and others perform
very rudimentary searches, similar to what they would try in Google. A
large number of students I encounter have no idea that multi-step searches
can be performed in databases from EBSCO and OVID and other such
databanks. They have never heard of proximity searching or the use of
parenthesis to nest search terms in conjunction with the use of boolean
operators, a method that is even available in Google.

Most folks in academic pursuits do not read, use or know about the literature
found with these links in my personal experience.

One can particulary learn a great deal from what medical librarians teach about
searching, as they need information quickly and accurately and do not have time
to fiddle around with poorly designed services. When they get phone requests
for information from a hospital operating room in which a patient will live or
die depending upon what they find in momments, this is not the time for a flood
of slightly relevant sources to be waded through in the weeks and months ahead.

Finally, so that what I mean by searching EBSCO in terms of the benefits
of its powerful search software, is very clear in contrast with what is
possible with web search engines, here is an example of a search in EBSCO
employing a multi-step search. This is read from bottom (step s1) to top
(step s24). One can see that problems do occur in searches, sometimes a
glitch at EBSCO. In this search example the sets for event attendance
that have null results in the repeated steps that limit results to subject
headings. These were viewed as a problem at the time of the search and
were repeated to make sure of the null result. Often such steps result in
a phone call to EBSCO to troubleshoot the problem. Anyone ever call
Google for such search assistance? In the end one puts together the best
combination or combinations that one can to get a group of articles and
other sources that best suit the topic for which information is sought.
In this case it simply could be the case that none of the databases used
the phrase event attendance as a subject heading.

There is a substantial learning curve to using databases effectively, but the
time saved with precise searches can be invaluable for folks who use these
tools effectively. Many academic institutions provide databases such as
Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier, CAB and Hospitality and
Tourism Complete to everyone at that institution and each of these databases
has valuable tourism and related content.

I do apologize for having to rush this out as the system was going down
this morning and hence having text in the first version that was not very
clearly stated. I hope this version is easier to understand.

Sincerely,
