italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear Michelle,
I can't imagine a Renaissance play without a confidant or sidekick for the hero and a confidante or sidekickess for the heroine to explain the antefatto to and to whom to bare their ravaged souls -- thus letting the audience too into the loop.
All too often the role of the confidant is purely functional. One of the most successful uses of the device to my mind (in which the characters are not cyphers but fully developed and autonomous individuals) are the roles of Dafne and Tirsi in Tasso's incredibly beautiful "portento" Aminta. Please read it again, everybody, just for the joy of it.

Oggetto: [I-S] another question about early modern Italian drama
italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Hello,
As we've just had one question about early modern Italian drama, maybe the group won't mind one more, from someone who knows more about French and English than Italian drama. Do any Italian plays (roughly 1500-1650) feature a balia/nurse figure, someone like the nurse in Romeo and Juliet, who is a little on the older side?
Titles of plays would be useful, but also ideas for books on the drama in which I might look.
Tante grazie,
Michelle Rioux
