When I looked at the available courses for the summer 1 session that fit into the perspectives general education block, I was looking for something that would be easy and not too difficult to manage while working forty hours a week. However, that changed when I saw that Sped 330 was being offered online for the summer 1 session. As soon as I saw that it was being offered I jumped on the chance to register for it when registration for summer 1 opened. I knew that by taking this class, not only would I be fulfilling my perspectives block requirement but I would also be learning about something that is beneficial to my future and to my career.
This class was supplemental to what I have learned in the three years that I have been a Special Education major. My knowledge base that I had prior to this course has grown immensely. I know that by understanding what I have learned in this class and by respecting individuals with disabilities, I will be able to provide the best and least restrictive learning environment for my students, those with and without disabilities.
One of the most important things that I think will help me be a great teacher is understanding that the disability does not define the person, it is society that uses an individual’s disability to define the person. Understanding this will allow me to teach my students how to be accepting of everyone and how to look deeper than a person’s outside appearance or any labels that society puts on them in order to get to know who that person really is rather than what society labels that person as. This will be an instrumental tool in creating a comfortable and safe learning environment for all of my students.
