Learning Arc wish to commission a consultant to project manage the Challenging History project.
Contract brief
Learning Arc have developed the Challenging History project to develop a greater understanding of the role that archives play in the protection, preservation and promotion of local heritage amongst children, young people, teachers and the local community.
The Challenging History project aims to facilitate access to archival heritage by using the medium of drama. We are looking to appoint a Project Manager to oversee this new and exciting project.
Context
The Challenging History project will use drama to explore the issues surrounding some controversial interpretations of past events. It aims to engage school age children and young people, the local community, volunteers and archive education specialists with archive material to explore a range of controversial issues.
Challenging History is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
Learning Arc is a partnership of seven archives in the North East who offer high quality resources and activities to schools. The partners are: Berwick-upon-Tweed Record Office, Durham County Record Office, Durham University Special Collections, Newcastle University Special Collections, Northumberland Archives at Woodhorn, Teesside Archives and Tyne and Wear Archives.
Project aims and objectives
Learning Arc wish to appoint a Project Manager to support the development of the Challenging History project. The project objectives are:
• Facilitate access to archives by using the medium of drama to inspire the children and young people to engage more fully with their local heritage.
• Demonstrate that archives can be used to study conflicting views and develop critical thinking skills
• Demonstrate that archives can be used to develop a creative curriculum
• Develop a greater appreciation of the role that archives play in the protection, preservation and promotion of local history and heritage
• Establish long lasting partnerships with schools and their local community
• Produce a permanent online resource highlighting methodology and demonstrating resources so that other schools can develop their own project.
Scope of services
The work will include the following elements:
• Establishing and maintaining good relations with all partners to facilitate the efficient and high quality delivery of the project
• Ensuring that all aspects of the project fully achieve their agreed objectives and are delivered to time, budget and quality.
• Ensuring the best use of resources in line with the requirements and guidelines set by HLF
• Ensuring effective monitoring of progress and regular provision of feedback to the Learning Arc steering group
• Acting as the first point of contact with external partners
• Assisting with the management of the project budget
Outputs of the project
• Minimum of six completed drama pieces that are performed by the chosen schools to a range of audiences
• Creation of a dedicated website that provides access to source material, ideas for teaching activities and plans of how the material was used to produce the drama
• Active engagement with a range of volunteers
• CPD sessions for teachers and volunteers to promote the project
Project timescale
The completion date for all aspects of this project is 31 July 2011. It is expected that the following milestones will form part of the project (other milestones to be determined by project manager and steering group)
June - July 2010 : appointment of drama specialist/creative practitioners
By end of July: decision on themes/topics and identification of relevant source material
Sept to March 2011: work in schools to create dramatic piece
Write up of resources
March to June: development of website
Throughout project: evaluation of project (to be carried out by independent evaluator)
Budget
The total budget for delivery of this contract is £4750 including VAT and travel and all other expenses.
In addition funding is available to support delivery of the project, for example to support creative practitioners, teacher supply costs, time of archive specialists and development of a supporting website.
