PhD STUDENT POSITION

Context
The FP7 European R&D project PREPARED is dealing with adaptation to
climate change of urban water systems (drinking water networks +
wastewater and stormwater systems). See www.prepared-fp7.eu.
PREPARED is composed of several work areas, one of them (WA3) being
devoted to monitoring and modelling. Significant progress in the
performance of traditional urban water systems facing global change will
require:
i) a better knowledge of the systems, both in fundamental understanding
as well as real time control, which can be obtained only by better
monitoring strategies and tools;
ii) better operation, management and planning which will based on better
modelling approaches, at both short and long times scales.

The WA3 is a toolbox providing validated methodological, technical and
software tool elements and components to be integrated and applied in
other project work areas, explicitly accounting for uncertainties. It
includes two categories of actions: i) actions aiming to test,
demonstrate, validate and make available, applicable and usable by end
users existing scientific knowledge which, until now, has not been
implemented in practice; ii) research actions, aiming to further
increase scientific knowledge.

Topic of the PhD thesis
The PhD work will be devoted to the development, testing and validation
of metrological methods and tools applicable to urban water systems, and
to their coupling with modelling. The research will focus on urban sewer
systems. A special effort will be devoted to the assessment of
uncertainties in both measurements and modelling, and to data and model
validation techniques.

Expected profile
Master Student, with skills in urban hydrology and sewer systems,
metrology, sensors, modelling, data validation. Skills in Matlab
appreciated.
