ABOUT THE WORKSHOP**
Recent years have witnessed an emerging interest for understanding the
relationship between interactive technologies and people’s erotic lives. As
interactive technologies spread to all spheres of human life, they affect
virtually all aspects of life, including erotic life. More and more people
today experiment with the application of IT based artifacts and
communication devices as part of their erotic lives, and even more people’s
erotic lives are affected by IT without a specific intention. However,
erotic life seems to have been left out, almost systematically, by studies
of IT in the home.
Quality of life in the workplace has been a key issue in HCI from the very
beginning, including Scandinavian participatory design and the early work of
Don Norman. The ideal technology for the support of erotic life may well be
very different from the technologies suitable in a work environment. The
mediation of intimacy or erotic arousal may benefit from interface
techniques much different from those needed in the negotiation of shared
meaning in the workplace.
WORKSHOP FOCI AND OUTCOMES
Erotic life intersects with numerous major areas of HCI. These include
domestic technologies and ubiquitous computing, health informatics, user
experience design, and embodied interaction, among others. Research on
human-computer sexual interaction could potentially contribute to theory,
user research methods, prototyping, and evaluation in any of these areas.
* *
The primary outcome of the workshop is the elicitation and systematization
of the issue and possible sub-field of research. We seek position papers on
any topic related to HCI and erotic life, including the following:
o New designs and interfaces
o Original user research and empirical studies
o Critical essays that explore relations between cultural theory and
human-computer sexual interaction
o Theories, models, and frameworks for the design and evaluation of
systems to support erotic life
o Case studies
o Inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinary research on erotic life and HCI
WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS
We encourage participation from diverse academic disciplines, including HCI,
design, human sexuality studies, gender studies, game studies, computer
science, and psychology, as well as industry experts and practitioners, for
a total of 15-20 people.
Participants will be selected based on 2-4 page position papers in SIGCHI
format<http://www.sigchi.org/publications/chipubform/cfp.doc/at_download/file>that
address workshop goals, reviewed by workshop organizers. In addition,
we also encourage video submissions (provided via a URL) that describe a
working system that can be demonstrated.
Please send submissions and/or inquiries about the workshop to
EroticHCI[at]gmail[dot]com,* *with the subject heading “NordiCHI Erotic Life
Workshop.”
