Our sorters have L shaped openings which hold the first page open because about 99% of our barcodes are inside. We have 2 sites with sorters which manage between 60-80% of returns at those sites and our users are used to opening books to return them. 3rd machine being installed soon.

Presumably, though, a sorter using barcodes requires the reader to open a book at the barcode correctly, which is not guaranteed.
