Dear Colleagues,
It is five years since the first cpd25 conference on 24 hour opening, during which time 24 hour and longer opening hours have become more common in academic libraries. With budgets getting tighter libraries need to ask themselves can we still afford 24/7? Are there ways that we can do it more efficiently?
On the Friday, 21st May, cpd25 will be running a second conference on 24 hour opening and we would like as many people as possible to come along, give us your views and listen to others' experiences in this area. Break out groups are planned to reflect current topics of concern and the day will end with a panel question & answer session.
Please note that as there are limited places available for this event we really need to have a good idea of how many people would like to attend by this Friday, 7th May.
The programme:
9.30 - 10.00 Arrival and coffee
10.00 - 10.15 Welcome and introduction, Mary Nixon
10.15 - 10.50 Kingston University show their training film about the work involved in keeping the LRCs open 24-hours, Sara Osman
10.50 - 11.20 Coffee
11.20 - 11.55 London School of Economics, Helen Cocker
11.55 - 12.30 SOAS - Why 24 hour opening was abandoned, Yvette Dickerson
12.30 - 13.30 Lunch
13.30 - 14.10 Leeds Metropolitan University - open all hours, Katherine Everest
14.15 - 15.00 Parallel sessions determined by feedback after delegates book - some possibilities:
* I wish I knew then what I know now - you know the electricity bill will go up and expect the carpets to wear out faster, but what else do you need to plan/budget for?
* What services to offer? Eg Kingston don't have cash transactions but will give out binding materials and note charge on borrower record
* Value for money - 24 hour opening is like the Christmas must have toy, but could we be providing a more effective service by using the funding for something else?
* Duty of care Security, provision of food, connecting with night buses?
15.00 - 15.15 Tea
15.15 - 16.00 Q&A to panel chaired by Mary Nixon
16.00 Close.
