Places are going fast for this popular UC&R Yorkshire and Humberside all day event: "Getting up to speed: hints and tips for new library professionals" to be held on June 8th at the National Centre for Early Music in York<http://www.ncem.co.uk/conferences>. This event is recommended for librarians who are either new to the role or want to brush up on their skills.
The day will comprise a keynote speech by Jo Webb, National Teaching Fellow and Academic Services Manager at De Montfort University. There will then be the opportunity to listen to:
Sarah Munks/Andrew Walsh (University of Huddersfield): Nuggets
This session will cover, in a practical, hands on way, a range of interactive teaching techniques that can be used in inductions/information skills teaching - all aimed at getting people in our classes more active rather than inflicting 'death by PowerPoint' on them. From 'Library Bingo' to 'Run Around' Sarah and Andrew will be using an assortment of techniques to give you a flavour of how they can be used to give an interactive and (hopefully!) enjoyable session.
Clare McCluskey (Academic Support Librarian at York St John University): Building Partnerships with Academic Tutors
Are you in a role which requires the teaching of information skills in partnership with tutors? Have you the task of implementing strategies with academic faculties? There is plenty of evidence which suggests that working closely with faculties, especially in the area of information skills, is beneficial for the students. However, there is little guidance around on how to get joint projects off the ground. Clare has been researching how to build better partnerships with members of her faculty and will outline the results thus far of these investigations, with hints and tips for moving forward.
Jennifer Rowland (University of Bradford): Confident Lecturing/Voice Projection
Jennifer will cover a few brief pointers that can help cut down on nerves when you're talking to groups, and then look at breathing and posture to help you be heard without hurting yourself.
Kirstyn Radford and Lisa Foggo (York University): Peer Support Teaching with Postgraduates
Kirstyn and Lisa will address the subject of peer support teaching with postgraduates, the work of the York University postgraduate training unit, and they will bring along a live postgraduate student that you can quiz to find out what they would like from an information skills session.
The event will conclude with a plenary session.
The course will start at 10 am and finish at 4pm. The fee is £40 + VAT for CILIP members or £50 + VAT for other attendees.
