At Southampton University, hard copy theses that have not yet been digitised are kept in closed access. They may be fetched to the Loans Desk for "reference only" use inside the library via a request form available on WebCat (the library catalogue) for registered users. (External users now have to phone or email the loans desk, since there is no longer a paper Stack request form.)
This is not normally a "same day" service, since stack collections are made only once each week-day morning.

Subject: Access to Hard copy theses in the Library
With much interest over the last year in making doctoral theses more accessible, either electronically via EThOS or in our institutional repository, we are now considering access to the remaining hard copy theses that are held in Store and that have not yet been digitised. Currently, hard copy theses are available on request from the Information desk and a thesis consultation form is signed on collection.
I would be interested to know if other libraries continue to hold the print copies of doctoral theses in the Library and whether they are kept in closed or open access.
Will summarise responses to the list,
Annette
