Subject: FW: [Shib-Users] Announcing IdP v3 initiation

An announcement from the Shibboleth development team relating to the
next version of identity provider software. The message is clear that
Shibboleth users should not wait to upgrade from version 1.3 to
Shibboleth 2 identity provider.

The UK federation maintains its advice to upgrade to version 2 of the
identity provider software, as soon as possible. Development support
will not continue beyond June 2010 for Shibboleth 1.3 IdP however we
will continue to provide technical support for this version of
Shibboleth.

Subject: [Shib-Users] Announcing IdP v3 initiation

We have begun work on IdP version 3. This is NOT a major rewrite like
2.x was. Our versioning policy[1] says that if we are going to break
API compatibility that we rev the major version number. Last years work

on implementing some test OpenID functionality[2], the n-tier delegation

extension[3], cardspace support[4], and some ECP work from this year[5]
have shown us that we need to fix some of the APIs related to our
profile handlers and authentication engine. These changes will break
API compatibility and so we are bumping the major version number.

With 3.x we'll also be making some changes to the configuration file
(see below for how to participate in that discussion). In the event that

we change any configuration file such that existing ones would no longer

be readable by the new IdP version we commit to providing an upgrade
script to address this. This means that upgrading from a recent version

of v.2 to v.3 will be pretty much the same as upgrading from one minor
v.2 version to another.

People should NOT wait for version 3 to install upgrades. We are not
committing to a particular time line for version 3 as we have not yet
nailed down what new feature features we want to add.

So, with all of that said, I'd like to invite people who are interested
in discussing version 3 to join the developers list[6]. Starting on
Wednesday I'll begin posting our current thoughts on new
features/improvements within v3 and inviting people to offer up their
ideas and thoughts. So if you'd like to participate in that, head on
over to shib-dev.
