Using Web 2.0 to Enhance Research and Collaboration
Part 2 (Creating and Managing Specialist Automated Portals and Online Reference Management)
Portals, Start Pages, rss Feeds and Aggregators, Reference Management Tools
The aim of this one day course is to gain a working knowledge of current Web 2.0 tools, from rss feeds and aggregators to creating a free online reference management database. Gain a basic working knowledge of how to create your own start page and Web portal to pool all of your research interests into one automated resource, and learn about some of the new search engines available on the World Wide Web. The basics of Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 will be covered as well as introduction to other useful websites and tools to aid research and collaboration. Students will learn about Web 2.0 tools and how to use them in their everyday work via teaching sessions interspersed with small workshops. Aspects of this course relating to Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 will also be covered on part 1 of our Web 2.0 course held on 28th June. There are no pre-requirements for attending part 1, although it is recommended that both parts are attended to gain a full sense of what Web 2.0 can do for you.
Who will benefit from this course ?
Anyone with an interest in using these new tools in aiding them carry out their day to day roles, whether it be research, librarianship, teaching or administration work. It is desirable that attendees have a moderate level of computer knowledge and essential that they have an email that they can access from anywhere, we recommend Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo account. It is advisable that each attendee create their own Google account ahead of the course.
Expected Course Outcomes
* Create your own rss feed aggregator and subscribe to journals and news feeds.
* Create your own online sharable reference management database.
* Create your own start page complete with audio, visual and textual content.
* Understand the principles of Web 2.0 and implications of Web 3.0.
* Investigate many of the new search engines on the Web today
