CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers are invited for a Computers & Graphics journal Special Edition on Cultural Heritage. This special
edition seeks contributions which showcase the usefulness of computer graphics technologies in cultural
heritage contexts.
An increasing number of museums, libraries, archives, archaeologists, epigraphists, numismatists, and
many others in the cultural heritage community are using digital tools themselves. This community is
already employing digital photography, digital storage systems, and are digitising large quantities of 2D
materials along with limited numbers of 3D materials and sites. Leading institutions and professionals
are exploring advanced computer graphics-based tools and methods in collaboration with digital
specialists. There are many success stories, the decipherment of the instructions to and the operation of
the 2nd-century BCE Antikythera Mechanism, arguably the first computer, is an example. More
remarkable examples are sure to follow.
Forward-looking research into computer graphics topics that are applicable to humanity's legacy,
computer graphics technology success stories in cultural heritage, examples of computer graphics tools
employed to enable public access and interactive engagement both within collections and sites as well
as over the Internet are encouraged. Also welcomed are new applications and adaptations of existing
tools and methods, explicitly designed for use by cultural heritage professionals which are compatible
with existing professional working cultures. These applications, as well as the research and road maps to
develop them, include methods of enhancing scientific reliability of digital representations, semantic
knowledge management, the recording of scientific process history provenance (digital 'lab notebooks'),
and long-term digital preservation strategies. Papers relevant to the computer graphics sciences and the
cultural heritage domain but not mentioned in this call are also welcome.
The Special Edition on Cultural Heritage editors are: Alan Chalmers from Warwick Digital Laboratories
(UK), Mark Mudge from Cultural Heritage Imaging (USA), and Luís Paulo Peixoto dos Santos from the
University of Minho (Portugal).
