Dear All
I should like to thank Elizabeth for both her postings, highlighting the
response by two of the main political parties to the recent formation of
the Archives & Records Association through the merger of SoA, NCA and
ACALG.
The list can't be a forum for party political exchanges. However, as
Elizabeth says, ignoring politics cannot be an option for our sector if
it is to prosper, perhaps even survive, over the next few years. There
is a cold wind blowing towards local authorities and universities, and
we should appreciate Elizabeth's giving us all a heads-up of the likely
wind-chill factor of two of the possible directions it might blow from.
Whatever the political complexion of the government which emerges next
week, the ARA is in far a stronger position than were its constituent
bodies to raise the profile of the sector, and demonstrate the value of
the work we all do, to that government and other governments and policy
making bodies in the UK and Ireland.
It strikes me that the response so far to Elizabeth's postings is little
more than digitally sticking our fingers in our collective ears and
going "la la la!!" If we can't discuss broad "political" issues which
impact on our sector here on archives-nra, where should we?
Goodness me, what a rant! That's what working Saturdays does for you.
Cheers
Martin

Dear All
My intent in sending the email was to highlight how the merger of the
three archive bodies has been successfully bought to the attention of a
potentially very important organisation. For political balance Labour
already supported the merger through the strong encouragement of MLA.
Unfortunately I cannot provide a Lib Dem position on this at the moment.
Basically I wanted to demonstrate that the archives sector is working to
raise its profile with decision makers, current and potential. Ignoring
politics may be an option for this list but it cannot be an option for
the sector.
Have a good weekend
Elizabeth

What's that got to do with keeping politics off this list?

And how would you describe Mr. Brown's recent comment about a supporter?
