I think few here would disagree that SP does not currently meet the
needs on its own. However it is getting closer and if you are having
this debate now you will need to take into account SP2010 - launched
next month I believe - which adds a whole new raft of functionality on
top of SP2007.
See e.g. http://sharepointrecordsmanagement.com/ for a discussion of
some of the new functionality. More no doubt on microsoft.com
Not that I am supporting the SP brigade. We do not have it here and I
believe there are better solutions, but if you are already substantially
bought in, the availability of such functionality within SP will
undoubtedly weaken the business case for something extra.

Subject: EDRMS implementation
Hi all,
I am interested to find other organisations who have either made a
commitment to implement an EDRMS or who are underway with an
implementation, or who have completed an implementation, who have, at
some point, considered the use of SharePoint, and come to the conclusion
that SharePoint will not adequately meet their organisations' records
management needs.
At Leeds, it has been our opinion for several years that SharePoint
would not meet our RM needs, however we are having repeated discussions
with colleagues who remain un-convinced about our need for an EDRMS in
addition to SharePoint.
A couple of my colleagues have been calling a range of organisations
over the past few weeks regarding the Sharepoint/EDRM debate and so if
they have been in touch with you already, thank you for your help.
If you are able to respond to this message, we'd appreciate a five
minute conversation, so please could you contact me directly off list in
the first instance at [log in to unmask]
Many thanks
